Todd Durkin owns a successful fitness studio, Fitness Quest 10, in San Diego which has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top gyms in the country by Men’s Health magazine. Todd works with a number of professional athletes and was recently a finalist on NBC’s Strong where he competed against a number of other top personal trainers all of whom were helping their clients to achieve success in their respective workout programs. Early in the show Todd was eliminated but he successfully re-entered the competition after out performing a number of the other trainer-competitors. It’s interesting to note that Todd was much older than many of the other competitors which shows that hard work, dedication and consistency pays off!
One of the things that establishes Todd as one of the most successful fitness professionals in the county is that he takes the time to listen to each client’s needs so that he can identify the most effective means of reaching his or her goal.
When you walk into Todd’s facility you are struck by two things:
- It’s smaller than you think it would be.
- There is an instantly recognizable feeling of community.
At FQ10, housewives, retirees and high schoolers are sweating alongside millionaire athletes which is one of the most impressive things about the facility – once they step through the door everyone is treated the same and challenged to achieve his or her best. In Todd’s facility, it’s not about the personalities, it’s all about making the commitment and doing the work necessary to be successful.
“Luck happens when preparation meets opportunity.” Todd and the people he trains achieve their goals not because of good luck but because of hard work, tenacity and daily habits that establish an environment of success. In short, they work their tails off to prepare and are ready for action when the opportunity presents itself.
Whether your goal is to lose a few pounds, complete a race, start a business or have a successful relationship nothing is possible until you take action. If you want to get fired up to reach your goals and be the best version of yourself then take the time to listen to my interview with Todd on All About Fitness, once you do you’ll realize why professional athletes along with business and spiritual leaders seek Todd out as a trainer and friend.
In our interview you will hear Todd’s steps for creating IMPACT; he uses these steps to help those he trains to achieve success, a partial list includes:
- Set specific goals and identify the steps required to reach those goals.
- Make time for meditation or quiet reflection.
- Have a positive mindset.
- Do the little things right.
In the short time I’ve been doing the All About Fitness podcast I have had the opportunity to interview some very successful individuals including influential leaders like Todd and Men’s Health contributor David Jack. Entrepreneurs like TRX inventor Randy Hetrick and successful athletes like adventure racer Joe Decker and master runner Sonja Friend-Uhl.
All are successful, not because of blind luck but because they made the decision to be successful and took the steps necessary to achieve that success. If you want to hear the conversations about their best practices then I recommend listening to each podcast where I try to keep the interviews short and focused on sharing actionable steps that you can do right now.
No matter where you are in life you can always do something different. Maybe you’re sitting there thinking, “If only I…” Stop thinking and take action. Even if it is only a small step, taking the first step in the right direction can set you off on a journey that can change your life.
